ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team wrapped up its Maize and Blue World Series Sunday afternoon (Oct. 21), as the Maize team defeated Blue, 12-3, in an eight-inning game three match-up at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. Sophomore Kevin White (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) had three hits, including two doubles, and sophomore/freshman Ryan Gallagher (Boardman, Ohio/Cardinal Mooney) struck out four in 3 2/3 hitless innings of work.
The Maize team struck for three runs in the bottom of the first. Senior Patrick Biondi (Woodhaven, Mich./Divine Child) led off the frame with a walk. He scored on a sacrifice fly from freshman Matthew Dacey (Wyckoff, N.J./Don Bosco Prep). White brought in junior Cole Martin (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn) with a double and scored as sophomore Zach Zott (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) reached on an error. The Maize team made it 4-0 in the second as sophomore Mike Dolloff (Davison, Mich./Davison) tripled and scored on a Donnie Eaton (Ann Arbor, Mich./Father Gabriel Richard) double.
Dacey had a one-out single in the third and made it to third on White's second double of the day. Back-to-back fielder's choices from Zott and sophomore Dylan Delaney (Woodland Hills, Calif./Chaminade) plated a pair of runs, making it 6-0 Maize. The Maize put up three more runs in the fourth. Biondi doubled to start the frame. DiLaura walked and both runs scored on a Martin double. Martin went to third on a groundout and scored on a White single. Zott then doubled in a run to make it 9-0.
The Blue put up two runs in the fifth. Junior Alex Lakatos (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) walked, went to second on a groundout and scored as freshman Travis Maezes (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) doubled. Maezes then trotted home on a two-base hit from junior Michael O'Neill (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty). The Maize came back with a run in the sixth as Dacey doubled in Biondi.
The Blue team scored a run in the top of the seventh as senior/junior Zach Johnson (Grandville, Mich./Grandville) walked, went to second on a single from sophomore Dominic Jamett (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./University Liggett School), moved to third on a double play and scored on a Maezes single. The Maize team wrapped up the scoring in the seventh on a two-run single from Biondi.
Biondi, Dacey and Dolloff had two hits apiece for Maize, while Maezes had two hits for the Blue team. On the mound, Gallagher had the four punchouts for the Maize team in the win. Dolloff struck out a batter in the final inning of play.
