STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Junior centerfielder Ryan LaMarre (Jackson, Mich./Lumen Christi) of the University of Michigan baseball team has been named to the Preseason All-America third team by the National College Baseball Writers Association. It marks the first preseason All-America honor for LaMarre, who was a second team All-Big Ten selection last season.
LaMarre is coming off a sophomore season in which he led the team with a .344 batting average, 62 runs batted in and 55 runs scored while finishing second in home runs with 12. LaMarre also paced the team with a .599 slugging percentage while stealing 13 bases in 18 attempts. He posted 15 multi-RBI games, including seven games with four or more.
"This is a great honor for Ryan with the success he has had in his first two seasons," commented head coach Rich Maloney. "He is a very gifted athlete who we are looking toward for big things this season in helping our team win and reach our goals."
LaMarre is one of just three conference players to garner preseason All-America honors from the NCBWA for this upcoming season. Ohio State's battery of Dan Burkhart and Alex Winners were both second-team honorees.
LaMarre and the Wolverines will begin a quest for their fourth Big Ten championship in the last five seasons when they open the 2010 campaign at the Texas Tech Tournament, Feb. 19-21, in Lubbock, Texas, versus Jacksonville State and Texas Tech.
