Brian Townsend is in his fourth year as the Director of Basketball Operations with the University of Michigan basketball program.
Townsend, a former linebacker with the Wolverine football team, returned to the Maize and Blue after spending four years as an assistant coach at Ohio University (2004-07). Townsend helped to bring Ohio basketball back to the forefront of the Mid-American Conference, helping the Bobcats to three-straight 19-or-more win seasons over his final three years.
Townsend played an instrumental role in the Bobcats' run to the NCAA Tournament during the 2004-05 season. During that season, Ohio closed with a 21-11 record and swept the field in the 2005 MAC Tournament to return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1994.
Prior to his appointment at Ohio, Townsend was the head boys' basketball coach at Pioneer High School for six years (1998-2003). He helped Pioneer win four straight Class A District titles (1999, 2000, '01, '02) as well as capture three Southeastern Conference Championships (2001, '02, '03). Townsend compiled a six-year record of 109-36 and helped Pioneer win its first ever Class A State Championship title in 1999. Townsend was named the Ann Arbor News Coach of the Year twice (1999 & 2000), while also earning the Region 6 Coach-of-the-Year distinction in 2002 from the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan.
Following his NFL career, Townsend began his basketball coaching career as a varsity assistant at his former school, Northwest High School, in Cincinnati, Ohio. In his only season with Northwest, he helped lead them to a school-best 17-8 record and first-ever appearance in the District and Sectional playoffs.
During his collegiate playing days (1988-91) at U-M, Townsend recorded 11 sacks and 115 tackles. After winning four straight Big Ten titles, he helped lead the Maize and Blue to four straight Bowl appearances, winning three of those games -- 1988 Hall of Fame Bowl (28-24, Alabama), 1989 Rose Bowl (22-14, USC) and the 1991 Gator Bowl (35-3, Mississippi). In 2000, Wolverine Magazine named Townsend to the Michigan Football All-Decade Team.
Following his playing career at U-M, Townsend was picked in the 11th round of the 1992 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Rams. Townsend played for both the Rams and Cincinnati Bengals for two seasons.
Townsend earned two bachelor's degrees from the University of Michigan -- one in sports management and communication in 1991 and a second in physical education and social science in 1996.
Townsend and his wife, Whitney (Winberg), recently celebrated the birth of their daughter, Linnea.
