ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's basketball team (No. 14 AP, No. 13 ESPN/USA Today) came back after being down eight points with a little more than three minutes left in regulation to topple Florida State in overtime, 82-80, on Friday night (Nov. 22) in the semifinals of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off at Coliseo Roberto Clemente.
In the second half, Glenn Robinson III (St. John, Ind./Lake Central) hit a three with 2:40 left, reducing FSU's lead to 67-63. A minute later, he hit two free throws to bring Michigan within two points of the lead. Both teams traded free throws on the next two possessions, then Nik Stauskas (Mississauga, Ontario/St. Mark's School [Mass.]) made a layup following a Michigan timeout to tie the game at 69 and force overtime.
Stauskas scored seven of the team's 13 overtime points and finished the night with a game-high 26 on 7-of-16 shooting from the field. Mitch McGary (Chesterton, Ind./Brewster Academy [N.H.]) posted a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds off the bench, while Derrick Walton Jr. (Harper Woods, Mich./Chandler Park Academy) scored 15 points and dished out a career-high six assists.
Michigan went 11-of-30 (37 percent) from the floor and 4-of-14 (29 percent) from three in the opening 20 minutes, falling down 10 going into halftime. McGary then scored six points in the second half, despite picking up his fourth foul with 4:21 remaining in regulation.
Florida State shot 31-of-59 (53 percent) and outscored Michigan in the paint, 44-26. Ian Miller scored a team-high 19 points for the Seminoles, while Okaro White put up a double-double with 18 points and 12 boards.
U-M finished the contest shooting 28-of-65 (43 percent) and converted 17 free throws, including four in OT.
The Maize and Blue will face Charlotte on Sunday (Nov. 24) in the championship matchup of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off. The game is set to start at 7:30 p.m. AST and can be seen on ESPN2.
