ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's basketball team improved to 4-1 with an 83-49 victory over Norfolk State on Tuesday night (Nov. 25) at Crisler Arena. Sophomore guard Manny Harris(Detroit, Mich./Redford HS) led the way for the Maize and Blue with his second double-double of the season with 16 points and a career-best 15 rebounds.
Four other Wolverines joined Harris in double figures as junior/sophomore Anthony Wright(Sterling, Va./Oak Hill Academy) scored 12, junior DeShawn Sims(Detroit, Mich./Pershing HS) and senior Jevohn Shepherd(Toronto, Ontario/West Hill Collegiate) posted 11 apiece, and freshman Zack Novak(Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton HS) netted 10. For Shepherd and Novak, the double-digit efforts were both career highs.
After a slow start that saw the Maize and Blue open up 0-for-10 from the field, the Wolverines went on a 13-3 run. Freshman Stu Douglass(Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS) opened the scoring for U-M with a trifecta at 15:21. Shepherd and Novak also hit three-pointers during the run, which included an alley-oop dunk by Sims off a feed from Harris.
Another basket by Novak at 9:30 sparked a 19-5 run for the Wolverines that pushed their advantage to 32-12, the largest lead of the half, and Michigan took a 38-23 lead to the intermission. Novak led all scorers with 10 at the break; Wright added nine for U-M in the first 20 minutes. Kyle O'Quinn led the Spartans with eight in the half.
Norfolk State scored the first two points of the second half before Michigan went on a 13-2 run to make the score 51-27. Following three straight points by the Spartans, a pair of free throws by Sims started an 18-1 run for the Wolverines that put the Maize and Blue up 69-31.
