Court Vision with C.J. Lee: Shaping the Right Mindset

Court Vision with C.J. Lee
THURSDAY, JAN. 1 -- Shaping the Right Mindset

Happy New Year everyone! The start of the 2008 season has been very good to our program. We are working hard to ensure that 2009 is just as good if not better for Michigan Basketball.

My thoughts on the Wisconsin game are this. In conference play, we need a level of focus and effort that are unmatched by our opponent every night out. I think all of our players realized yesterday that we do not have the luxury of sitting on the 10 wins we have accumulated so far and expect to coast into Big Ten play. There is more work to be done. There are a lot of games left to be played and won.

The intensity goes up, the scouting is better, and the stakes are higher in conference play. Wisconsin is so solid and they do not make many mistakes over the course of a 40 minute game. We made some runs in the first and second half but they always countered with a play to separate themselves again. The one lesson we take from this game is conference play requires everyone on our team to have the right mindset going in. As soon as people step on the court, they have to know that for all 18 Big Ten regular season games they are going to be challenged and called on to respond to these challenges.

As captains, Dave (Merritt)and I have to make sure that everyone is in the right mindset to help us win. Yes we had a quick turnaround from North Carolina Central, but that is the reality of our conference and every other conference in the NCAA.

Our next game is against Illinois and it should be a good test for us. Illinois is coming off a great win versus Purdue and they will be ready to play from the jump. Everything is not all good when you win and everything is not all bad when you lose.

We will watch the Wisconsin film today and practice the next couple days to correct our mistakes and work on certain areas of our team.

2009 is here and so is conference play. For our team's sake, we need to have the attitude that we are 0-1 right now
