PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Freshman guard Trey Burke (Columbus, Ohio/Northland HS) of the University of Michigan men's basketball team was named the co-Big Ten Player of the Week, as well as the Freshman of the Week today (Monday, Jan. 2) by the conference office. Burke earns his first conference Player of the Week honor, which he shares with Michigan State's Keith Appling, and racked up his third freshman honor of the season.
Burke helped the Wolverines open the Big Ten season 2-0 and remain undefeated at home (9-0) with wins over Penn State (Dec. 29) and Minnesota (Jan. 1). During the week, he averaged 20.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists, as well as shot 52.4 percent from the field and 88.9 percent on free throws (16-for-18).
In U-M's Big Ten opener against Penn State, Burke finished with 13 points, five rebounds, seven assists (no turnovers) and two steals in 36 minutes as the Wolverines won, 71-53, giving head coach John Beilein his first conference-opening win at Michigan.
Closing the week, Burke exploded for a career-best 27 points after going 8-for-11 from the field (72.7 percent) with a career-best 9-for-11 performance from the free throw line. He added three rebounds, three assists and another steal in 38 minutes as the Wolverines held off a late charge by the Gophers to go 2-0 in league play with a 61-56 victory.
For the season, Burke is averaging 14.0 points (13th in Big Ten), 3.2 rebounds and 5.0 assists (3rd in Big Ten) per game. He has scored in double figures in 12 games, with two 20-plus point efforts, and has seven games with five or more assists.
