SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- University of Michigan men's basketball freshman Trey Burke (Columbus, Ohio/Northland HS) was named one of 20 finalists for 2012 Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame today (Wednesday, Jan. 4).
The annual honor, named for Hall of Famer and former Boston Celtic Bob Cousy, recognizes the top point guards in college basketball. The list is comprised of 20 student-athletes who have shown the same leadership, hard work and determination as Cousy did throughout his collegiate and professional playing career. The 20 finalists will be narrowed down to 10 players in early February and then down five players by early March.
Just 14 games into his first season, Burke has started all except one game while averaging 14.0 points, 3.2 rebounds, 5.0 assists, and a team-leading 33.6 minutes per game. Three times this season he has been recognized for his play as the Big Ten Freshman of the Week -- Nov. 28, Dec. 12 and Jan. 2 -- and he earned his first conference Player of the Week honor Jan. 2.
Burke, who ranks 13th in the Big Ten in scoring, has scored in double figures 12 times and posted a career-best 27 points in U-M's win against Minnesota. Ranked third in the conference in assists, Burke has posted seven games with five or more assists, including a career-best nine twice -- vs. Duke at the Maui Invitational and against Oakland at the Palace of Auburn Hills.
Joining Burke on the finalist list from the Big Ten are Ohio State's Aaron Craft and Wisconsin's Jordan Taylor. The 2012 Bob Cousy Award will be presented at the Hall of Fame's class announcement on Monday, April 2, in New Orleans, La., as part of NCAA Final Four weekend.
