Senior guard Josh Bartelstein begins his senior season and his third year writing the J-Bart Blog. He will give all Wolverine fans an inside look into the program and life outside of basketball during the 2012-13 season.
What's up everyone?
Not a bad week to be a Michigan basketball fan! We had two tough Big Ten games and two really good wins. We took care of business in the opener at Northwestern in front of a great crowd (there was more maize than purple) and then Iowa at home in front of another sellout crowd!
I personally love playing at Northwestern because of the huge turnout we get from all the Michigan alumni. I have to admit, a lot of my family and friends are there so that makes it special. We had chants of "Let's Go Blue!" and "Defense" the whole game. It really is cool to feel like the home team during an away game.
The most impressive thing about our win there was our ability to lock in on Northwestern with such a young team. They run a unique offense that if you don't focus and communicate, you will be exposed. I had a really good feeling going into the game because of the way we had been practicing. Add that with our transition offense and a great game by Trey (Burke) and Jordan (Morgan) and you get a great road win. Wins on the road are very difficult to come by and to start 1-0 is terrific. J-Mo has really improved his offensive game, which opens up so much for our team!
We got back from Northwestern around 1 a.m. on Friday morning and two days later took on Iowa at home. That is a very quick turnaround especially when playing a game at noon; however, we had two great days of practice and played well again. The thing that was so impressive to me about the Iowa win was just how much fun we had playing together. It is something that has been pretty evident all year, but our unselfishness is what is making this team unique. You see everyone with a smile on their face because we are playing the right way and taking pride in each other's success. Our bench is pretty much standing the whole game!
I thought the guy who changed this game was Mitch (McGary). His energy and effort was contagious to our whole team and made us go on that huge run. The other thing that is pretty evident with all our big guys, but especially Mitch, is when they get clean rebounds, we are really dangerous running. Mitch has such great vision of the court for a big guy and it opens up the whole court!
With all those positives, we still have a ton to work and improve on. We will be right back in the film room tomorrow working on getting ready for Nebraska and making our team better. You do not win any trophies for being good at the beginning of January. This is a long process and the teams that can win and still evaluate their weaknesses will be standing at the end!
Okay, okay, switching gears.
In addition to our game with Nebraska, we have a huge game tomorrow night.
Tomorrow is the championship of our video game tournament. We were all divided into three teams, the freshmen, the seniors and then everyone else (I'll call them the middle men). We had a round-robin tournament playing FIFA and NHL.
Now this was funny because no one on our team really plays these games besides Max (Bielfeldt), who somehow lost to Corey (Person) in what is a bigger upset then the Wizards beating the Heat. After all the dust settled, the seniors will take on the "Middle Men" tomorrow night on the big screen at Crisler Center in a game of NBA 2K!
My team, the seniors, had practice tonight and is ready to go. We know the key is to slow down Trey as he is the key to the "Middle Men." We couldn't be less worried about Tim (Hardaway Jr.), Jon (Horford), Jordan and Max.
It should be noted that I really shouldn't be talking because I'm awful at video games, but at least I admit it unlike some people who live in my house not mentioning names. Eso (Akunne) is our go-to guy and I couldn't be more confident we will pull this one out!
Stay tuned to Twitter because I'm sure there will be a lot of updates/trash talk going on.
With that hopefully I will see many of you Wednesday night. It is going to be another sellout and trust me you don't want to miss out on the action right now!
Keep writing into the blog at email@example.com.
I want to wish you all a Happy New Year as well!
