LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Sophomore guard Trey Burke (Columbus, Ohio/Northland HS) of the University of Michigan men's basketball team was named to the John R. Wooden Award Midseason Top 25 today (Thursday, Jan. 10) by the Los Angeles Athletic Club and ESPNU.
Selected by the Wooden Award National Advisory Board, the list is made up of 25 student-athletes who, based on their performances in November, December, and the beginning of January, are the frontrunners for college basketball's most prestigious honor. The players on the list are considered strong candidates for the official ballot.
Burke, who is also a top 20 finalist for the Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year Award, has led Michigan to a perfect 16-0 start, matching the program's best start to a season, as well as the NIT Season Tip-Off title and a No. 2 national ranking. He leads U-M with 18.2 points per game as is the only Wolverines to score in double figures in all 16 games, including six 20-point performances. He also leads U-M and the Big Ten with 7.3 assists per game as he has 14 games with five-plus assists including three games of 10 or more. He also owns career bests for field goal percentage (.533), three-point percentage (.392) and free throw percentage (.776).
A two-time Big Ten Player of the Week, Burke has recorded three point-assist double-doubles, with the most recent coming against Iowa (Jan. 6) with 19 points and a career-best 12 assists. That performance against the Hawkeyes helped him earn the Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week by the USWBA.
The Wooden Award All American Team, consisting of the nation's top 10 players, will be announced the week of the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. The John R. Wooden Award Player of the Year presented by Wendy's will be announced on ESPN during the Final Four weekend in Atlanta. The 2013 Wooden Award Gala presented by Wendy's will take place April 11-13 at the Los Angeles Athletic Club.
