ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan men's basketball head coach John Beilein will be one of 48 collegiate head coaches competing in the Infiniti Coaches' Charity Challenge, which begins today (Wednesday, Jan. 18). Beilein will be competing to win up to $100,000 for the St. Louis Center in Chelsea, Mich.
Established in 1960, the St. Louis Center is a caring, residential, living and learning environment providing for the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The St. Louis Center is administered by the Servants of Charity Congregation of Catholic missionary priests and brothers who have dedicated their lives to caring for the "poorest of the poor" of the world, especially persons with developmental disabilities.
"I am thrilled to take part in this year's Infiniti Coaches' Charity Challenge," said Beilein. "The opportunity to raise awareness and support for an organization like the St. Louis Center is tremendous. I have seen first-hand the work that the St. Louis Center is doing for so many people that need their assistance. I am proud to take part in this fundraising effort."
The 48 participating head coaches, each representing his own charity, will be split into four regions -- Midwest, East, West and South. From Jan. 18 to Feb. 27, fans can vote for Beilein and the St. Louis Center at www.espn.com/infiniti. An ESPN member name is required, and fans may vote once per day for their favorite coach and charity in each region.
The top vote-getter in each region will move to the Final Four voting period, to take place Feb. 28-March 8. In the Final Four, each coach's total gets reset to zero, and votes only count if they are received during that period. The coach who receives the most votes in the Final Four will be declared the winner.
Infiniti, a corporate partner of NCAA Men's Basketball, will donate $5,000 to each participating coach's selected charity. The coach who wins the competition will win $100,000 for his charity.
