ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Former University of Michigan men's basketball standouts Trey Burke (Columbus, Ohio/Northland HS) and Tim Hardaway Jr. (Miami, Fla./Palmetto Senior) were selected among nine rookies and nine sophomores for the NBA's Rising Stars Challenge during NBA All-Star Weekend. Both former Wolverines rookies were first-round draft picks; Burke was selected ninth overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves and traded to the Utah Jazz, while Hardaway was selected 24th overall by the New York Knicks.
The 18 selected NBA rookies and sophomores (nine each) will be mixed together on teams for the third straight year. The BBVA Compass Rising Stars Challenge Draft is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 6, and will be televised on TNT at 7 p.m. General Managers for the two teams will be announced at a later date.
Burke, who is starting for the Utah Jazz, is averaging 13.3 points, 5.7 assists and 3.1 rebounds during his rookie season. He has scored in double figures 24 times and has recorded three double-doubles. Burke was also named the Western Conference Rookie of the Month during December.
In Hardaway's rookie campaign, he is averaging 8.6 points and shooting 45.9 percent from the field, including 40.9 percent from three-point range. He has scored in double figures in four of his last five games.
Among those selected for the NBA's Rising Stars Challenge include Big Ten alumni Victor Oladipo (Indiana, Orlando Magic) and Jared Sullinger (Ohio State, Boston Celtics).
The participants in the Rising Stars Challenge were chosen by the NBA's assistant coaches, with one ballot submitted per team.
