Wolverines to Celebrate 25th Anniversary of 1984-85 Squad
Feb. 3, 2010
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's basketball program and U-M Development department will welcome back the 1984-85 men's basketball team for a reunion this Saturday (Feb. 6) at Crisler Arena when the Wolverines face Wisconsin (No. 16 AP/No. 16 ESPN/USA Today) at 4 p.m. Tentatively scheduled to attend the reunion is head coach Bill Frieder, assistant coach Dave Hammer, players Chuck DeGlopper, Gary Grant, Antoine Joubert, Leslie Rockymore, Steve Stoyko, Garde Thompson and Butch Wade, and team managers Tom Alig, Phil Giroux and Chris Schrot. The 1984-85 squad finished the season with a 26-4 record, which remains the program's all-time highest winning percentage. The team posted the best Big Ten regular-season record in Wolverine history, going 16-2 on its way to the Big Ten title. Michigan earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament and entered the postseason ranked No. 2 in the nation. The Wolverines finished the season on a 17-game winning streak, the longest streak in Michigan history, before falling to eventual national champion Villanova in the second round. Frieder was named Big Ten and National Coach of the Year and center Roy Tarpley was the unanimous Big Ten Player of the Year and a second team All-America selection. Joubert and Grant, who was the Big Ten Freshman of the Year, were named to the All-Big Ten second team. Grant is fourth all-time in scoring at Michigan, after compiling 2,222 points during his prolific career, and is one of just five Wolverines to score more than 2,000 career points in a career. Wade and Richard Rellford were recognized as honorable mention All-Big Ten players. The game against Wisconsin is scheduled for 4 p.m. and will be broadcast nationally on CBS. The Wolverines are looking for their third win against a ranked opponent this season after defeating No. 15 Ohio State, 73-64, and No. 15 UConn, 68-62, at Crisler Arena earlier this season.
