ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore forward Zack Novak (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton HS) of the University of Michigan men's basketball team was named a CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America District IV first team member today (Thursday, Feb. 4).

Joining Novak on the first team were Bowling Green's Joe Jakubowski and Marc Larson, Dayton's Kurt Huelsman and Wright State's Cooper Land.

As a full-time starter for the Wolverines, Novak performs on the basketball court while providing assistance off the court to young children and pursuing his business degree at U-M's prestigious Stephen M. Ross School of Business, ranked No. 4 nationally by US News & World Report.

Novak is averaging a career-best 7.4 points and 4.7 rebounds per game while playing in a career-best 32.1 minutes per game. He has six games scoring in double figures and 11 games grabbing five or more rebounds.

Novak has played in 55 career games for the Wolverines and has averaged 6.9 points and 4.0 rebounds per game in his career. Novak was also named the first sophomore captain in program history.

Novak visits Mott's Children's Hospital, helps out with the Kids Kicking Cancer program and serves as a basketball summer camp counselor. An Academic All-Big Ten candidate, Novak is also a regular visitor to local Ann Arbor elementary schools as a part of reading programs in addition to other game activities with the children.

Three Academic All-District teams are chosen in each district, with those on the All-District first teams placed on the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration.

To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution. A student-athlete must also have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games and have completed one full calendar year at his/her current institution and reached sophomore athletic eligibility.
