PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- University of Michigan men's basketball forward Mitch McGary (Chesterton, Ind./Brewster Academy [N.H.]) was named the Big Ten's Freshman of the Week today (Monday, Feb. 11) by the conference office. It marks the second conference rookie accolade for McGary this season.
Considered U-M's "sixth man," McGary had a career-best week as he averaged 13.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.5 steals while shooting 56.5 percent (13-for-23) from the field and playing 30.5 minutes per contest.
McGary opened the week with a career-best 14 points and career-best four steals in helping U-M to a thrilling overtime win against No. 10 Ohio State (Feb. 5). He also grabbed six rebounds, shot 53.8 percent from the field (7-for-13), and played a then-career-best 29 minutes off the bench.
In the heartbreaking overtime loss at Wisconsin (Feb. 9), McGary posted his second straight double-figure scoring game with 12 points, going 6-for-10 from the field. He added eight rebounds and three steals while playing a career-high 32 minutes off the bench.
For the season, McGary leads the Wolverines with 6.1 rebounds per game and is averaging 6.4 points. He is shooting 58.7 percent from the floor and is second on the Wolverines with 24 steals.
Overall, U-M has 11 conference accolades this season and has earned at least one honor is 10 of the 14 weeks. Tim Hardaway Jr. (Miami, Fla./Palmetto Senior HS) and Trey Burke (Columbus, Ohio/Northland HS) have two Player of the Week honors apiece, while Nik Stauskas (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada/St. Mark's School [Mass.]) has three Freshman of the Week awards, and Glenn Robinson III (St. John, Ind./Lake Central HS) and McGary each have two rookie honors.
Michigan will continue its two-game road swing on Tuesday (Feb. 12) when it travels to play in-state rival Michigan State in East Lansing. Tipoff is slated for 9 p.m., and the game will be televised on ESPN.
