Burke Wins Big Ten Player of the Week for Third Time

PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- For the third time this season, University of Michigan men's basketball sophomore guard Trey Burke (Columbus, Ohio/Northland HS) has been named the Big Ten's Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office today (Monday, Feb. 18).

Burke capped off another strong week of play as he averaged 23.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game. He also shot 59.3 percent from the field (16-for-27), while shooting 66.7 percent from long range (6-for-9) and 90 percent from the free throw line (9-for-10).

Opening the week, Burke went 7-for-11 from the field at Michigan State (Feb. 12) as he finished with a team-best 18 points, while adding four assists, three steals and two rebounds. He also went 3-for-5 from long range. Closing the week, Burke tallied a season-best 29 points against Penn State (Feb. 17), while adding five assists, three rebounds and two steals. He was 3-for-4 from long range, and had a season-best 8-for-9 shooting from the free throw line.

Burke, who has helped U-M to a 22-4 overall mark this season, is averaging a career best for points (18.6), assists (6.9), field goal percentage (48.9), three-point percentage (39.1), free throw percentage (78.5) and steals (1.5). He is a Top 12 Finalist for the Oscar Robertson National Player of the Year Award and the Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year Award. He is a Top 25 Finalist for the John R. Wooden Award National Player of the Year, and is on the watch lists for the Atlanta Tipoff Club's Naismith Player of the Year Award and John R. Wooden All-America Team.

Overall, U-M has 12 conference accolades this season and has earned at least one honor is 11 of the 15 weeks. Along with Burke's three accolades, Tim Hardaway Jr. (Miami, Fla./Palmetto Senior HS) has collected two this season, while Nik Stauskas (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada/St. Mark's School [Mass.]) has three Freshman of the Week awards, Glenn Robinson III (St. John, Ind./Lake Central HS) and Mitch McGary (Chesterton, Ind./Brewster Academy [N.H.] ) each have two rookie honors.

The Wolverines will have a week off before they return to the hardwood next Sunday (Feb. 24) for their matchup against Illinois inside Crisler Center. Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m., and the game will be televised on ESPN.
