PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- University of Michigan men's basketball player LaVell Blanchard (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) was selected Tuesday (March 5) to the All-Big Ten Conference third team as voted by the media. Michigan State's Adam Ballinger, Ohio State's Brent Darby, Iowa's Luke Recker and Minnesota's Dusty Rychart join Blanchard on the media's third team.

Blanchard

Blanchard, a 2002 NABC/Pontiac Division I All-District 11 second team selection, leads Michigan in scoring and rebounding for the third consecutive season, averaging 14.1 points and 6.3 rebounds a game. He is shooting 42.0 percent from the field, 32.7 percent on three-pointers and 81.9 percent on free throws, while averaging 29.0 minutes per game.

He recorded his 1,200th career point and 600th career rebound and earned his 21st career double-double against Penn State on Feb. 9. He has three double-doubles this season. Additionally, he set and tied a career high in rebounds (14) against Oakland (Nov. 16) and at Penn State (Jan. 2).

This is the third straight year that Blanchard has been an All-Big Ten honoree. He was a third-team pick by the media in 1999-2000, when he was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year by the media and shared the rookie award as selected by the coaches. He earned second-team All-Big Ten honors from both the media and coaches as a sophomore in 2000-01.

Blanchard and the rest of the No. 10 seed Wolverines will tip off the Big Ten Tournament Thursday (March 7) when they play No. 7 seed Northwestern in the first round at 4:30 p.m. at the Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind. The game will be televised on ESPN.
