PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- University of Michigan men's basketball guard Trey Burke (Columbus, Ohio/Northland HS) earned his seventh Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor, as announced by the conference Monday (March 4). Burke earned his third straight weekly honor from the conference and shared it with Indiana's Cody Zeller.

Burke closed the Big Ten regular season by helping the Wolverines to a pair of road wins, a No. 2 seed in the upcoming Big Ten Tournament and a share of the program's first Big Ten title in 26 years. During the week he averaged 20.0 points. 3.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game while shooting 56.5 percent from the field (13-for-23), 57.1 percent from long range (4-for-7) and 90.9 percent from the free throw line (10-for-11).

Opening the week, Burke helped U-M win at Illinois for the first time since 1995 -- a span of 13 games -- with a 72-61 victory Thursday (March 1). Burke posted his fourth 20-plus-point game with 21 points while adding five assists and three rebounds. With those five assists, Burke broke U-M legend Gary Grant's 27-year-old school record for assists by a freshman.

With the Wolverines needing a win to keep their conference title hopes alive, Burke responded at Penn State by leading U-M with 19 points, three rebounds and an assist as the Wolverines won their fifth Big Ten road game of the season, 71-65, on Sunday (March 4). The win sealed a 13-5 record that eventually earned the program a share of the Big Ten regular-season title with Michigan State and Ohio State.

A candidate for All-Big Ten honors, including Freshman of the Year, Burke is averaging 14.6 points and 3.4 rebounds and ranks second in the Big Ten with 4.6 assists per game. He has hauled in eight Big Ten awards this season, with one Player of the Week and seven Freshman of the Week honors. He was a top-20 finalist for the Bob Cousy Award for the nation's top point guard.

Michigan has secured a first-round bye and the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Big Ten Tournament, to be held Thursday through Sunday (March 8-11) at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind. U-M will open play Friday (March 9) at 6:30 p.m. against the winner of No. 7 seed Northwestern and No. 10 seed Minnesota. The game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
