ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- University of Michigan men's basketball freshman guard Trey Burke (Columbus, Ohio/Northland HS) and senior guard Zack Novak (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) each added another honor to their list of accomplishments this season.
Burke was named to the U.S. Basketball Writers Association 2011-12 Men's All-District V Team, announced today (March 6) by the association, while Novak was named to Sports Illustrated's 13th annual All-Glue Team, also announced today by national college basketball writer Seth Davis.
One of just two freshmen on the 10-man All-District V list, along with Indiana's Cody Zeller, Burke continues to add to his accolades, which include seven Big Ten Freshman of the Week selections and one Player of the Week honor. After helping Michigan clinch a share of its first Big Ten regular-season title in 26 years, Burke was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year by the media, All-Big Ten second team from coaches and media, and a unanimous selection to the conference all-freshman team on Monday (March 5).
In his freshman campaign, Burke is averaging 14.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 4.6 assists. He has scored in double figures 28 times, breaking the 20-point barrier four times, including a career-high 27 against Minnesota. With his 144 assists, Burke broke U-M's 27-year-old record for freshman assists in a single season, previously held by U-M legend Gary Grant (140, 1984-85).
Novak, an All-Big Ten honorable mention as selected by the media, was the conference's only representative on the 2012 Sports Illustrated's All-Glue list. He becomes the sixth player since the award's inception in 2000 to make the team twice -- the first since Illinois' Roger Powell (2005, 2006) -- and remains the only Wolverine to ever receive the honor. The annual All Glue-Team is comprised of players from all that make exemplary contributions to their team that go beyond the statistics that they register.
The second three-time captain in program history, Novak is averaging a career-best 9.5 points to go along with 4.6 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game during his senior year. His accomplishments and character on and off the court have garnered him Academic All-America third team recognition and finalist status for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award during the 2011-12 season.
Michigan has secured a first-round bye and the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Big Ten Tournament being held Thursday through Sunday, March 8-11, at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind. U-M will open play on Friday (March 9) at 6:30 p.m. against the winner of Minnesota and Northwestern. The game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
