ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- After winning its first outright Big Ten regular-season title in 28 years, the University of Michigan men's basketball team earned the program's first No. 1 seed in Big Ten Tournament history. The 2014 Big Ten Tournament will be held Thursday through Sunday (March 13-16) at Banker's Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind.
The Wolverines earned their fifth first-round bye in 17 Big Ten Tournament appearances and will open the tournament on Friday (March 14) at noon against the winner of the match-up between No. 8 seed Indiana and No. 9 seed Illinois. Michigan's quarterfinal game will be a rematch of one of its two final regular-season games. The Wolverines won at Illinois, 84-53, and closed conference play with an 84-80 victory against Indiana at Crisler Center.
Michigan holds a 23-7 overall record and claimed its first outright Big Ten regular-season title since 1986 with a 15-3 conference record. The 15 wins are the most by a U-M team since 1992. The Maize and Blue had an 8-1 Big Ten home record for the third straight season and added a 7-2 road mark, which was just the fourth time in school history the Wolverines had seven-plus road wins in a season.
Michigan is 13-15 all-time at the Big Ten Tournament. Under U-M head coach John Beilein, the Wolverines are 6-6 in the conference tournament.
