ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- University of Michigan sophomore guard Trey Burke (Columbus, Ohio/Northland HS) was named the U.S. Basketball Writers Association District V Player of the Year today (Tuesday, March 12). In addition, Burke is joined by junior guard Tim Hardaway Jr. (Miami, Fla./Palmetto Senior HS) on the All-District V Team.

In total, nine Big Ten players were represented on the All-District V team. Joining Burke and Hardaway on the squad are Illinois' Brandon Paul, Indiana's Victor Oladipo and Cody Zeller, Minnesota's Trevor Mbakwe, Ohio State's Aaron Craft and Deshaun Thomas and Wisconsin's Jared Berggren. Butler's Rotnei Clarke is 10th member of the District V team.

Burke, who was recently named the Big Ten's Player of the Year and a unanimous All-Big Ten first teamer, led the Wolverines to a 25-6 overall mark through the regular season. He is averaging 19.2 points and 6.8 assists per game and was the only Big Ten player to score at least 15 points in all 18 conference games. During the season, he became the seventh U-M sophomore and 47th Wolverine to reach 1,000 career points. He also became just the fourth Wolverine to record 200-plus assists in a season (212) and needs 28 more to set the U-M single-season record.

Hardaway, who earned All-Big Ten first team honors from the conference coaches, is averaging career bests for points (14.8), rebounds (4.7), assists (2.2), field goal percentage (45.0) and three-point field goal percentage (38.0). He needs to play in one more career game to become the 59th Wolverine to reach 100 in a career, while earlier in the season he became the 46th Wolverine to reach 1,000 career points.

Michigan has earned the No. 5 seed in the upcoming Big Ten Tournament, being held Thursday through Sunday, March 14-17, at the United Center in Chicago, Ill. U-M will open play on Thursday (March 14) against No. 12 seed Penn State. The game will begin 25 minutes after the conclusion of the No. 8 Illinois vs. No. 9 Minnesota matchup, which starts at 11 a.m. CDT, and it will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
