Selection Sunday: Behind the Scenes with Coach John Beilein
The University of Michigan men's basketball team received an at-large bid into the 2009 NCAA Basketball Tournament Sunday evening (March 15). The Wolverines, who will return to the tournament field for the first time in 11 years, reached the 65-team field during head coach John Beilein's second season at the helm of the program.

The anxiety-filled Sunday was full of elation at 6:34 p.m. EDT when the official announcement came down: Michigan was in the Dance! The Wolverines will face seventh-seeded Clemson on Thursday (March 15) in Kansas City.

Following is a glimpse into how head coach John Beilein spent Selection Sunday:

3 a.m. Checks the score of the Utah State game on his cell before going back to bed.
6a.m. Wakes up.
7:30a.m. Attends mass at St. Thomas.
10-11:45 a.m. Watches and cuts tape from the quarterfinal loss to Illinois.
11:30a.m. Eats lunch by himself because his wife is out shopping in Ann Arbor.
11:55a.m. Leaves the house and stops for Caribou coffee on the way to Crisler Arena.
12:30-1p.m. Meets with the coaching staff to go over today's film and practice schedule and scenarios for how they would handle the selection, "Whether we are in or out of the tournament."
1-1:45p.m. Watches film with the players and goes over teaching points that they wanted the players to focus on during the short practice session.
2-3p.m. Practices with the players on fundamentals and individual work.
3p.m. Watches last nine seconds of the SEC Championship game between Mississippi State and Tennessee.
4-4:15p.m. Said he couldn't sit down so, "I moved the barbecue grill outside and cleaned some sticks off the lawn."
4:55p.m. Leaves house for the eight-minute return trip to Crisler for the selection show.
5:35p.m. Heads down the tunnel to greet the fans that came to watch the selection show with the Wolverines.
5:40p.m. Sits down and gets prepped for a live television interview on CBS's pre-selection show coverage.
5:45p.m. Talks live for three minutes on CBS with Greg Gumbel and Seth Davis about his team's tournament resume.
5:49p.m. Greets the players and staff courtside. The team received a standing ovation from the crowd and the band began playing the greatest fight song in the country, The Victors.
5:51p.m. Takes the microphone and welcomes the crowd of over 1,200 fans to Crisler Arena. He thanks the band, cheerleaders and fans for their support and tells them, "This is going to be tight. Whether we are in or out, remember we are all in this together."
6p.m. The NCAA Tournament Selection Show begins on CBS.
6:29p.m. Athletic Director Bill Martin, Basketball Administrator Greg Harden and Coach Beilein huddle together during the commercial prior to the announcement of the final bracket.
6:34p.m. Any uncertainty becomes a reality as Michigan's ticket is punched for the NCAA Tournament. The Wolverines are announced as the 10th seed in the South Regional and will face seventh-seeded Clemson from the ACC on Thursday. A celebration ensues and a smile is visible on the coach as the arena erupts in excitement and the team begins to jump around and hug each other.

Players, coaches, administrators and fans react as Michigan's name is announced.
6:37p.m. Grabs the microphone and asks the crowd, "I don't even know because of all this excitement, where are we going" He proceeds to applaud the efforts of his team and introduces his coaches and staff. He thanks Bill Martin before handing the mic to senior point guard David Merritt to say a few words. Merritt told the fans, "Thanks for the continued support this year and last season and we see you in Kansas City."
6:41p.m. Has the players lead the crowd in the signing of The Victors.
6:44p.m. Interviews with all-conference first team performer Manny Harris on the Big Ten Network courtside among the crowd.
6:46p.m. Chats briefly with Doug Karsch about the match up with Clemson for an video report.
6:50p.m. Finally gets to spend a few moments with his wife and some family members of the players.
7:01p.m. Stops to sign an autograph for a fan outside the tunnel before heading into the locker room for a few brief moments alone.
7:04p.m. Hugs senior C.J. Lee outside the locker room and talks with DeShawn Sims in the tunnel about taking care of his class work before the team departs for the tournament.
7:06p.m. Steps to the podium to address the media; speaks for 12 minutes and answers questions about the team's return to the NCAA tournament and the opening-round match up with Clemson.
7:20p.m. Spends time with his family in the tunnel for approximately 10 minutes.
7:31p.m. Tapes his weekly coaches show with Matt Shepard.
8:01 p.m. Departs Crisler Arena to meet his family at Bar Louie in Ann Arbor.
