ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- For the third time in University of Michigan men's basketball history, the Wolverines will have tri-captains as seniors LaVell Blanchard (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) and Gavin Groninger (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield HS) and fifth-year senior Rotolu Adebiyi (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) have been voted by their teammates to lead the Wolverines in the 2002-03 campaign.
Blanchard has led the Wolverines in scoring and rebounding each of the last three seasons. In his 85 career games, he has tallied 1,333 points, for a 15.7 average, and 640 rebounds, for a 7.5 average. In 2001-02, Blanchard became the 24th player in U-M history to reach 1,000 points and 500 rebounds. He has 21 career double-doubles.
Known for his outside shooting, Groninger has played in 84 career games for the Wolverines and has tallied 108 career three-pointers. He is shooting 34.3 percent from long range for his career and has 514 career points.
Returning for a fifth year, Adebiyi will serve his second season as team captain. In 2001-02, he played in 20 games with two starts and had a career-high four points at Illinois (Jan. 12, 2002) and a career-high four rebounds against Fairfield (Nov. 20, 2001).
The Wolverines have had tri-captains two previous times, last season with Chris Young, Leon Jones and Adebiyi and also during the 1999-2000 season with Josh Asselin, Darius Taylor and Peter Vignier.
