ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- For the first time in University of Michigan men's basketball history, the Maize and Blue have elected four players to serve as captain for the upcoming 2005-06 season. Seniors Lester Abram (Pontiac, Mich./Northern HS), Graham Brown (Mio, Mich./Mio-AuSable HS), Sherrod Harrell (Kalamazoo, Mich./Central HS) and Chris Hunter (Gary, Ind./West Side HS) were all selected in a team vote prior to the 2005 Basketball Awards Celebration. Abram, Brown and Harrell will all serve as captain for their second straight season after serving as tri-captains in 2004-05.
Abram will be looking to return to the Wolverine lineup after only playing in three games before season ending surgery on his left shoulder had him missed the final 28 games. Abram has played in 64 career games, with 54 starts. For his career he is averaging 11.6 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists.
Brown has played in 86 career games, with 73 starts. He is averaging 5.2 points and 4.6 rebounds in his career. He is a three-time U-M Steve Grote Hustle Award winner and has also received the 2005 Thad Garner Leadership Award, the 2005 Wayman Britt Outstanding Defensive Player Award and the 2004 Travis Conlan Sportsmanship Award.
Harrell has seen action in 82 career games, with 13 starts. Coming off the bench for his defensive presence, he had averaged 1.0 points and 0.8 rebounds throughout his career. He is the recipient of the 2005 Thad Garner Leadership Award, the 2004 Steve Grote Hustle Award and the 2003 Travis Conlan Sportsmanship Award.
Hunter has played in 75 career games, with 20 starts. After a strong year as a junior, he is upped his career averages to 6.5 points, 3.4 rebounds and just under one block per game. He was honored with the 2005 Award for Outstanding Free Throw Shooting and the 2003 Rudy Tomjanovich Most Improved Player Award.
Prior to next season's quad captains, the Wolverines have had no more than three players serve as captain in the 89 years of Michigan Basketball. The Maize and Blue have had tri-captains a total of four times - 1999-2000, 2000-01, 2002-03 and 2004-05.
