ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In conjunction with the Big Ten, the ACC and ESPN, the University of Michigan men's basketball team announced today (Wednesday, May 8) the Wolverines will travel to Durham, N.C., to face Duke for their 2013 Big Ten/ACC Challenge matchup on Tuesday, Dec. 3, at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Following the ACC's expansion to 15 teams for the upcoming 2013-14 season, three teams -- Clemson, Wake Forest and Virginia Tech -- will not participate in the 12-game event, which will be played over a two-day period -- Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 3-4.
Each day of the Challenge will be split evenly with three home and three road contests for each conference. Seven of the 12 matchups are first time Challenge games, while three games will be re-matches from a year ago -- Wisconsin facing Virginia on the road; Minnesota hosting Florida State and Illinois going to Georgia Tech. All Challenge games will be televised on ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU, with platforms and times being announced at a later date.
Michigan, which has a 5-7 all-time record in Challenge games, will meet Duke for the first time in the conference series. The Blue Devils' 12-2 Challenge record is the tops among all teams.
Overall, U-M has an 8-21 all-time record against the Blue Devils, playing the last two games at neutral sites -- 2011 NCAA West Regional (L, 73-71) and 2011 Maui Invitational (L, 82-75). The Wolverines last played in Durham on Dec. 8, 2007, which resulted in a 95-67 loss. U-M is 3-9 all-time in road games with Duke.
Beginning in 1999, the ACC won the first 10 Commissioner Cups, while the Big Ten has claimed the last four straight.
