ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan men's basketball head coach John Beilein announced today (Friday, May 9) the signing of 6-foot-6 guard Aubrey Dawkins (Palo Alto, Calif./New Hampton Prep [N.H.]) to a National Letter of Intent to join the Wolverines for the 2014-15 academic year.
"We feel very fortunate to have Aubrey join our basketball program," said Beilein. "He is very athletic, long, a full 6-6, and has a tremendous upside. We love his passion and diligence for skill development and know he possesses great understanding of the game of basketball. We anticipate his versatility as a player will prove valuable on our team."
Dawkins becomes the sixth member of U-M's incoming class. Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman (Allentown, Pa./Central Catholic HS) also signed during the late period, joining November early signees Kameron Chatman (Portland, Ore./Columbia Christian HS), D.J. Wilson (Sacramento, Calif./Capital Christian School), Ricky Doyle (Cape Coral, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) and Austin Hatch (Fort Wayne, Ind./Loyola HS [Calif.]).
"The six young men we have brought in have the potential to make an impact on our program right away," added Beilein. "We cannot wait for all of them to get on campus this June so we can begin working with them."
Dawkins, who is the son of Stanford head coach and former Duke All-American Johnny Dawkins, spent the 2013-14 season playing a postgraduate year at New Hampton Prep in New Hampton, N.H., under head coach Peter Hutchins. He averaged 12.3 points and 3.6 rebounds while helping the Huskies to a 22-8 record. New Hampton reached the 2014 NEPSAC Class AAA championship game before falling, 68-63, to Brewster Academy.
Prior to his prep year, Dawkins played two varsity seasons at Palo Alto High School under head coach Adam Sax. He averaged 16.0 points during his two seasons, scoring 801 points while leading the Vikings to a 44-9 record, back-to-back SCVAL De Anza Division titles, and an appearance in the 2013 Central Coast Section Open Division Playoff.
As a senior he averaged 18.8 points, 7.0 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game and was named the Most Valuable Player of the SCVAL De Anza Division. Dawkins was a two-time Central Coast Section All-League first team selection (2012, '13) and earned first team honors from the San Jose Mercury News and the Daily News in 2013.
Michigan loses five players from its 2013-14 roster, as fifth-year senior Jordan Morgan (Detroit, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit) will complete his master's in manufacturing engineering, senior Jon Horford (Grand Ledge, Mich./Grand Ledge HS) will complete his undergrad degree and transfer for his final season of eligibility, and sophomores Nik Stauskas (Mississauga, Ontario/St. Mark's School [Mass.]), Glenn Robinson III (St. John, Ind./Lake Central) and Mitch McGary (Chesterton, Ind./Brewster Academy [N.H.]) elected for early entry into 2014 NBA Draft.
