ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan and the Big Ten Conference announced today (Wednesday, May 10) that U-M men's basketball coach Tommy Amaker will head up the 2006 Big Ten Foreign Touring Team during its 10-day tour through Australia in mid-August.
"To represent not only the University of Michigan but also the Big Ten Conference with this tour is a tremendous honor," said Amaker. "We look forward to putting together a well-represented group from each conference school and playing competitive basketball against some strong competition in Australia."
The touring team, whose trip is scheduled from Aug. 8-18, is tentatively scheduled to play a four-game exhibition schedule against top teams from Sydney and Brisbane, Australia. The Big Ten squad will be made up of two selected Wolverine players and one selected player from each conference school. The Big Ten roster and tour schedule will be determined at a later date.
The Big Ten Foreign Tours have given more than 292 student-athletes the opportunity to travel abroad, as the men have toured such places as Spain, Japan, France, Italy, Finland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, England and Ireland. In 13 years, the men's teams have posted a 51-34 record.
