ANN ARBOR, Mich. C University of Michigan men's basketball players Zack Gibson (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS), K'Len Morris (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) and DeShawn Sims (Detroit, Mich./Pershing HS) will travel to Taiwan and China this upcoming summer as part two different basketball tours.
Playing with Athletes in Action and representing the United States, Gibson will travel to Taipei, Taiwan, June 30 to July 12. Highlighting the trip will be the team's participation in the 2007 R. Williams Jones Cup. In addition to the Jones Cup, Gibson will also be involved in several clinics and other community activities throughout his visit.
Playing with Sports Reach Tours, Morris and Sims will travel as teammates throughout China on a 14-day tour July 1-14. The Wolverine duo is scheduled to play up to eight games while in China while also participating in other community activities throughout their tour.
The Jones Cup is an international basketball tournament held annually in Taipei. It is named after Renato William Jones, a basketball promoter who was one of the founders of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). The tournament invites club, collegiate and national teams from around the world but mainly from the Asian region. The tournament started in 1977, and ever since the Jones Cup tournament has been held annually with the exception of two seasons. Overall, the United States has won 14 championships.
The 2007 Jones Cup tournament, played at Sinjhuang Stadium will feature teams from Taiwan, Qatar, Jordan, Lebanon, Iran, Japan, Korea, Kazakhstan, Philippines and the United States.
Gibson spent the 2006-07 season sitting out due to NCAA transfers rules after leaving Rutgers University. In his first year, Morris saw action in seven games before he suffered a left shoulder injury, which was followed by season-ending surgery. Sims played in 33 games during his freshman season and averaged 3.4 points and 2.3 rebounds while coming off the bench for 9.4 minutes per contest.
