ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan men's basketball head coach John Beilein announced today (Friday, June 8) that 6-foot-5 guard Caris LeVert (Pickerington, Ohio/Central HS) has signed a multi-year financial aid agreement with the Wolverines.
"Caris has so many of the qualities that we look for in our recruiting at Michigan," said Beilein. "He works hard both in classroom and on the court. He is still just 17 years old, so his potential is outstanding. With his speed and quickness it not only gives us another player who can penetrate opposing defenses, but it will also be an asset for us on the defensive end. We are hoping that he will have great success as both a scorer and a defender. We are very excited about coaching Caris in the years ahead."
"I'm very blessed and thankful for having an opportunity to come to the University of Michigan," said LeVert. "I look forward to working hard every day in the Maize and Blue."
LeVert, who was coached by Jerry Francis, had a breakout senior season, averaging 18.4 points, 3.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists and guiding Pickerington Central to a 26-2 overall record, the Ohio Capital Conference (Ohio Division) league title (13-1) and the OHSAA Division State title. He was named an Associated Press All-Ohio Second Team member as well as the Ohio Capital Ohio Division Player of the Year, All-Ohio Capital Conference, Ohio Division first team, All-Central District first team, Columbus Dispatch Metro Player of the Year (co-) and All-Metro first team.
Following his senior season, LeVert was named the MVP of the Ohio North/South All-Star game as his 23 points and six rebounds, including a last-second three-pointer, guided the South to a 116-114 win. With nine points, he also helped Team Ohio to a 116-113 win in the Ohio/Kentucky All-Star game.
LeVert originally signed with Ohio University in the fall, however, following the Bobcats head coach leaving the program, he was released from his scholarship and able to sign with another university.
The LeVert addition is the fifth for the Wolverines for the incoming class of 2012-13. Mitch McGary (Chesterton, Ind./Brewster Academy [N.H.]), a 6-10 forward, and Glenn "Tre" Robinson III (St. John, Ind./Lake Central HS), a 6-6 forward, and Nik Stauskas (Mississauga, Ontario/St. Mark's School [Mass.]), a 6-6 guard, all signed NLIs during the November's early signing period, while Michael "Spike" Albrecht (Crown Point, Ind./Northfield Mount Hermon Prep [Mass.]), a 5-11 guard, signed during the late spring period.

"Caris will do a great job of working hard to earn his spurs. He will get it done in the classroom and carry himself in a positive manner within the community. I look forward to Caris working hard in the weight room and on the floor to give him a chance to play and make contributions as a freshman."
