Blanchard Named Preseason All-American by Playboy
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan men's basketball player LaVell Blanchard (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) has been named to the 2001-02 Playboy Preseason All-America Team and will be honored with a banquet ceremony Saturday, July 14, at the Omni Hotel in Chicago, Ill.

Blanchard and nine other selected players from across the nation have been selected for the honor. The complete list of the 10-member team will be announced in the December issue of Playboy magazine, which is scheduled for a mid-November release. In addition to the small banquet, the selected team members will participate in a basketball clinic at a local Chicago high school and then have a photo session for the magazine article.

This is the 25th year that Playboy has announced an All-America team. Such players as Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Patrick Ewing, Shaquille O'Neal, Grant Hill, Tim Duncan and Allen Iverson have made previous teams.

Blanchard, who is a finalist for the 2001 USA Basketball World Championship for Young Men Team, was named 2001 All-Big Ten Conference second team by the Big Ten coaches and by the Big Ten media. He was also named to the 2001 NABC/Chevrolet All-District 11 first team and was selected as the Big Ten Player of the Week for the week ending Jan. 28.

Blanchard led the Wolverines in scoring (17.8) and rebounding (8.4) for the second straight season in 2000-01. He doubled his double-double career total to 18 after collecting nine in 2000-01, and he scored a career-high 30 points at Iowa (Jan. 20, 2000) to become the first U-M player to hit for 30 points since Louis Bullock did it against Eastern Michigan (Dec. 9, 1998).
