SYDNEY, Australia -- The Big Ten Basketball Foreign Tour, headed up by University of Michigan coach Tommy Amaker, opened its 2006 Australian tour with a 117-91 loss to the West Sydney Razorbacks Basketball Club in Sydney on Saturday (Aug. 12) at the Hills Basketball Stadium.

After arriving in Sydney, Australia on Wednesday (Aug. 9) and three days of sightseeing for the Big Ten squad, the Big Ten squad did not show any sluggishness at the opening tip, notching two quick baskets in the first minute, however, the Razorbacks came back quickly to outscore the Big Ten, 35-19, in the first stanza. The West Sydney team maintained its momentum through the next three quarters, never allowing the Big Ten Foreign Tour team to post a rally and ensure the Razorbacks a 117-91 victory.

All 11 players saw playing time and tallied at least two points in the contest. Illinois Marcus Arnold led the squad in scoring with 18 points, shooting 6-of-11 from the field, while Ohio States Ron Lewis closed with 16 points after help with an 8-for-10 performance on the free throw line. Minnesotas Jonathan Williams notched a team-best 13 rebounds, while Indianas Roderick Wilmont registered 12 boards, including 10 defensive rebounds. Northwestern's Tim Doyle added 10 rebounds of his own to go along with nine points.

Michigan's Jerret Smith (Romulus, Mich./Romulus HS) gave the Big Ten three double-digit scores as he chipped in 11 points on 4-of-11 shooting coming off the bench. Smith also had three rebounds and an assist. Fellow Wolverine Lester Abram (Pontiac, Mich./Northern HS) started the game and had nine points on 4-of-11 shooting. Abram added four rebounds, an assist and a steal.

The Big Ten contingent resumes competition against the Sydney Kings on Sunday (Aug. 13). The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. local time.
