BRISBANE, Australia C With eight players scoring in double-figures, including a team-high-tying 22 points from Michigan's Lester Abram (Pontiac, Mich./Northern HS), the Big Ten Men's Basketball Foreign Tour team wrapped up the 2006 Australian Tour with a dominating 145-69 victory over the South District Spartans Basketball Club Wednesday (Aug. 16). With the win, the Big Ten closed the four-game tour with a 3-1 record and helped improved the men's record to 54-35 all-time in 14 years of foreign tours.

The 145 points was the highest-scoring total in Tour history, breaking the previous mark of 141 points established in 1992, when the Big Ten squad defeated the National Select team, 141-75, in Essex, England (Aug. 9, 1992).

The Big Ten squad jumped out to a 27-14 lead in the first 10-minute period and never looked back. Indiana's Roderick Wilmont and Abram were the squad's leading scorers against the Spartans with 22 points each. Abram was unstoppable, shooting a perfect 9-of-9 from the field, while also adding seven rebounds and two steals.

Six other players reached double-figures for the Big Ten in Illinois' Marcus Arnold (18), Purdue's Gordon Watt (18), Ohio State's Ron Lewis (17) , Iowa's Seth Gorney (12), Michigan's Jerret Smith (Romulus, Mich./Romulus HS) (11) and Minnesota's Jonathan Williams (10). Smith also added a game-best six assists, while Arnold recorded his second double-double of the Tour with 10 rebounds. As a team, the Big Ten finished 63-95 (.663) from the floor and 11-of-18 (.611) from the free-throw line.

"It was great to finish the tour with a win," said Big Ten Foreign Tour and University of Michigan coach Tommy Amaker. "Obviously, we played a very young team tonight, but our squad stayed focused and played hard from start to finish, as well as representing the conference in a first-class manner."

The Big Ten Foreign Tour Team outscored its opponents by a total of 67 points (442 to 375) and averaged 110.5 points per game, while holding its opponents to 93.7 during the four-game trip C a difference of 16.8 points per game. Illinois' Arnold became the second Fighting Illini in Tour annals to lead the squad in scoring as he poured in a team-best 71 points in four outings to average 17.8 points per game. Arnold tallied double-figures in all four contests, while also registering two double-double performances. Five other conference standouts averaged more than 10 points per game including: Lewis (16.3 ppg), Abram (15.3 ppg), Watt (13.5 ppg) and Wilmont (10.5 ppg). Williams led the Big Ten contingent in rebounds with 9.0 boards per contest.

As for the Wolverines on the tour, both Abram and Smith started two of the four games. Abram averaged 15.3 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists. He closed the tour shooting 56.1 percent from the field (23-for-41), 22.2 percent on three-point field goals (2-for-9) and 86.7 percent on free throws (13-for-15). As for Smith, he finished averaging 6.8 points, 2.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game. He shot 47.8 percent from the field (11-for-23), 25.0 percent on three-point field goals (1-for-4) and 57.1 percent on free throws (4-for-7).

The Big Ten Foreign Tour Team will close out the tour by visiting the Australian Zoo on Thursday (Aug. 17) and then return to the United States on Friday (Aug. 18).
