Groninger Returns After Successful Overseas Trip
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan guard Gavin Groninger (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield) and the Big Ten Conference Touring Team returned from their trip to England and Ireland with a perfect 6-0 record as the Big Ten won by an average of 26.0 points per game.

This marks the first time since the 1995 tour of Japan that a team finished with a perfect record. The 1995 team went 7-0. Groninger, who reached double digits in scoring in all but the first game, finished second on the team in scoring with 13.3 points per game, and joined Northwestern's Tavaras Hardy as the only players to lead the team in scoring twice.

The team jumped off to a strong start as it beat the Ealing Tornados Select 110-83 (Aug. 10). An apparent case of jet lag slowed Groninger down as he finished the game with two points while going 1-for-12 from the floor. With fresh legs under him in game two, Groninger exploded to lead the team in scoring with 22 points on 8-of-11 shooting in the team's 98-76 win over the Islington White Heat (Aug. 11). The team marked its third victory as it defeated the London Towers 107-82 the following night (Aug. 12). Groninger followed his 22-point performance with a solid 13-point, five assist showing in the team's third straight win in England.

The Big Ten tour team registered its first win in Ireland in front of the largest crowd of the tour, downing Waterford Crystal 105-47 (Aug. 14). The Big Ten team came out firing and ended the first quarter with a 24-10 lead. The lead was stretched to 51-17 by halftime as the tour team's defense allowed only seven points in the second quarter. Groninger dumped in 11 points while shooting 5-of-9 from the floor. The win moved the team's record to 4-0 and gave this year's team the most wins by such a team in five years. The team improved to 5-0 as it defeated Limerick Burger King with a score of 112-96 (Aug. 17). Groninger finished the night with 13 points while shooting 50 percent from the field.

The tour ended with a hard-fought win over the Irish National Team. The game was tight for the entire 40 minutes but was decided late in the second quarter. Down by one with 2:44 left in the quarter Groninger connected on a three-point bucket to cap off a 7-0 run and give the tour team a 39-37 lead. That bucket gave the team a lead it would never relinquish. For the second time on the European tour Groninger led the team in scoring, as he netted 19 points on 5-of-11 shooting.
