ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- To kick off the 2009-10 season, both the men's and women's basketball teams will be participating in Michigan Madness on Friday, Oct. 16, the first day of practice allowed by the NCAA. Crisler Arena doors will open at 8 p.m. and admission is free.
The official basketball program will begin at 9 p.m. with player introductions. A skills competition and scrimmages will follow, allowing students and fans to get a first glimpse of the season's upcoming teams.
Festivities will begin at Crisler Arena with the John Beilein Greek Shootout. Teams of three, made up of members of Michigan's fraternities and sororities, will compete in a bracket-style tournament where one member of each team shoots a lay-up, a free throw and a three-pointer. The first team to have all three members complete the cycle will advance to the next round.
The Wolverine men's basketball team is coming off a 21-14 effort during the 2008-09 campaign, the 22nd 20-plus win season in program history. The Wolverines garnered their 21st NCAA Tournament appearance, advancing to the second round. During the season, Michigan defeated four top-25 teams, including two wins over top-five programs and set U-M single-season records for free-throw percentage (75.7 percent), three-point field goals made (305) and three-point field goals attempted (912).
The women's team is looking to rebuild in 2009-10, returning eight letterwinners and welcoming six freshmen after a 10-20 record a season ago. The Wolverines knocked off two top-25 teams while leading the Big Ten Conference in three-pointers made per game (6.57).
