ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan men's basketball sophomore forward Mitch McGary (Chesterton, Ind./Brewster Academy [N.H.]) is featured on the regional cover of Sporting News' 2013-14 College Basketball Magazine and has been named to the preseason All-America first team by the magazine.
McGary was joined on the All-America first team by Creighton senior Doug McDermott, Oklahoma State sophomore Marcy Smart, Duke freshman Jabari Parker and Kansas freshman Andrew Wiggins.
The Sporting News also listed McGary as the Big Ten's top overall player with fellow sophomore Glenn Robinson III (St. John, Ind./Lake Central HS) listed fifth. Wolverine freshmen Zak Irvin (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern HS) and Derrick Walton Jr. (Harper Woods, Mich./Chandler Park Academy) were the second and third ranked big Ten newcomers, respectively, and head coach John Beilein was the third best Big Ten coach.
The magazine had the Wolverines ranked preseason No. 7, following top-ranked Kentucky, No. 2 Michigan State, No. 3 Louisville, No. 4 Duke, No. 5 Arizona and No. 6 Kansas. Rounding out the top 10 is No. 8 Syracuse, No. 9 North Carolina and No. 10 Oklahoma State.
McGary helped U-M to a 31-8 overall mark last season and a national runner-up finish after averaging a double-double in postseason play recording 14.3 points and 10.7 rebounds per game. During the regular season, he led the team with 6.3 rebounds per game, while averaging 7.5 points.
