Senior guard Josh Bartelstein begins his senior season and his third year writing the J-Bart Blog. He will give all Wolverine fans an inside look into the program and life outside of basketball during the 2012-13 season.
What's up everyone?
It is amazing how fast times flies by, but we are officially at the start of the 2012-13 season. We couldn't be more excited about it. We have spent the last five months lifting weights, running, shooting jumpers and playing pickup to get us ready for this day!
The first week I consider our "training camp" -- where we really get after it with about two-and-a-half-hour practices. I have a feeling we will spend a ton of time on defense, as that is a staple of Michigan basketball, but I'm sure we will do a ton of competitive drills during the first week.
This is where you see great competition in practice, guys trying to earn minutes. The best part about our team is no matter how fierce the competition gets on the court, it doesn't affect the relationships off of it. We know the harder we work in practice and the more of a battle there is for minutes, the better our team will be. Every team starts practice tomorrow and every team is going to think they are working as hard as anyone in the country. We just need to bring it every day and the rest will take care of itself.
This past Wednesday was our team media day, always some of the guy's favorite day of the year. Knowing my new roommates, what this means to me is that guys are going to have to get "lined up" -- AKA getting a haircut so they look great for the camera.
I would have bet a lot that our downstairs bathroom would turn into a barbershop. Sure enough it did. I got home from the store and there was Tim (Hardaway Jr.) with a huge smile on his face getting lined up. Just to be sure for all of you, I did not sit in the chair. I could only imagine what they would do.
Media Day was a success for sure. It is always cool to see the freshmen wide-eyed with all the media attention and answering the same questions over and over. I thought they all did a great job and answered the questions just like a Michigan Man should. I had someone ask me a very interesting question, "Does it ever seem like the whole season doesn't mean too much because you know it just comes down to March Madness?"
It seems people forget or don't realize that the best part of the season is the journey.
Now, yes it is great to win Big Ten championships and make the NCAA Tournament, but just as special are the laughs we share in the locker room, on the team plane or at the hotel. The journey is what makes the season mean so much and all the memories with it. So I would never trade just getting to March with a No. 4 seed like last year, because the moments starting tomorrow and ending in March are what the ride is all about!
I will write again in a week, when a lot of guys are banged up and tired from a week of training camp, but it is amazing how much we will learn and how far we will come in that short time. With our first game about three weeks away, there is not a lot of time like other years to prepare.
Keep sending in your comments and questions to firstname.lastname@example.org and I will keep answering them for you. The support so far for the blog has been great, let's keep it up.
Good luck to the football team this weekend. It should be a great Homecoming weekend.
