PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- The Big Ten Conference announced its 2008-09 basketball preseason honors at the conference media day today (Sunday, Oct. 26), with University of Michigan sophomore guard Manny Harris(Detroit, Mich./Redford HS) being selected to the five-member men's All-Big Ten preseason squad.
In addition to Harris, the 2008-09 All-Big Ten preseason team included Michigan State's Raymar Morgan, Purdue's Robbie Hummel and E'Twaun Moore and Wisconsin's Marcus Landry. Hummel was pegged as the preseason Big Ten Player of the Year as his Boilermaker's were selected to win the Big Ten title by the 22-member media voting panel. Michigan State was picked second and Wisconsin was chosen for third.
Harris, an All-Big Ten second team and Big Ten All-Freshman team performer a season ago, averaged 16.1 points per game last season and is the leading returning scorer in the Big Ten. He started all 32 games as a freshman and led the Wolverines for the entire season in per-game scoring (16.1), assists (2.7), steals (1.4), minutes (33.0) and free throw percentage (81.7).
Harris, who was U-M's Bill Buntin Most Valuable Player in 2007-08, posted 28 double-figure scoring performances, including eight contests of 20 or more points. He scored a career-best 29 points at Penn State late last season (March 1, 2008). With his 493 points last season, Harris was just seven points shy of becoming the fourth U-M freshman to score 500 or more points in a season.
Harris and the Wolverines open the season with an exhibition contest against Saginaw Valley State on Thursday, Nov. 6, at 7 p.m. at Crisler Arena. The regular season will tip off when U-M hosts the Ann Arbor Regional for the 2K Sports Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer, Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 11-12, at Crisler Arena. U-M opens against Michigan Tech on Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 7 p.m.
