ATLANTA, Ga. -- University of Michigan men's basketball sophomore guard Tim Hardaway Jr. (Miami, Fla./Palmetto Senior HS) was one of 50 players named to the 2011-12 Naismith preseason watch list today (Monday, Nov. 7) by the Atlanta Tipoff Club.
The watch list was compiled by the Atlanta Tipoff Club's Board of Selectors, which based its criteria on player performances from the previous year and expectations for the 2012 college basketball season. The Naismith Trophy is considered the most prestigious national award presented annually to college basketball's player of the year.
Joining Hardaway on the preseason watch list from the Big Ten is Michigan State's Draymond Green; Northwestern's John Shurna; Ohio State's William Buford, Aaron Craft and Jared Sullinger; Purdue's Robbie Hummel; and Wisconsin's Jordan Taylor.
Hardaway, who was also named to the Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 list, started all 35 games in his freshman campaign with the Wolverines, averaging 13.9 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game. He was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week four times -- the only non-Ohio State player to win the honor -- and was second among Big Ten freshmen in scoring, behind only Ohio State's Jared Sullinger.
A unanimous choice to the Big Ten All-Freshman team last season, Hardaway scored in double figures in 27 games, including each of his last 16 games. With his 30 points in an overtime win at Iowa on Feb. 19, he became the first U-M freshman to post 30-plus points in a game since Daniel Horton (2003-2006). Hardaway also recorded his first career double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds against Northwestern on Feb 9.
In February, the Atlanta Tipoff Club's Board of Selectors will compile a mid-season team of the top 30 players in the nation. Then in March, the Naismith Trophy voting academy will vote to narrow the list to four finalists. The Naismith Trophy will be awarded at the 2012 NCAA Men's Final Four in New Orleans.
