ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's basketball team announced Thursday (Nov. 8) that it will unveil its 2012 Big Ten regular-season championship banner prior to the Big Ten/ACC Challenge game against North Carolina State on Nov. 27 at Crisler Center.
In addition, junior guard Tim Hardaway Jr. (Miami, Fla./Palmetto Senior) and sophomore guard Trey Burke (Columbus, Ohio/Northland HS) were selected to the preseason Top 50 list for the John R. Wooden Award by the Los Angeles Athletic Club. It is Hardaway's second straight year on the list.
Michigan finished the 2011-12 campaign with a 24-10 overall record, including a 13-5 Big Ten mark to claim a share of its first Big Ten regular-season title since 1986 and post its most conference wins since the 1993-94 season. The Wolverines earned their highest Big Ten Tournament seeding of all-time (No. 2) and advanced to the semifinals of the conference event for the second straight year.
The Wolverines made their third NCAA Tournament appearance in the last four seasons, receiving a No. 4 seed in the Midwest Region. Michigan's 24 wins last season are the most in head coach John Beilein's five seasons at the helm of the program.
The Wooden Award preseason list is chosen by a poll of national college basketball media members and is comprised of 50 student-athletes who, based on last year's individual performance and team records, are the early front-runners for college basketball's most prestigious honor.
Last season, Hardaway averaged 14.6 points per game and was an All-Big Ten third team selection. He needs just 20 points to become the 46th Wolverine to score 1,000 points in a career.
A preseason Associated Press All-American and All-Big Ten selection, Burke averaged 14.8 points, 3.5 rebounds and 4.6 assists as a freshman and was named U-M's first AP All-America honorable mention selection since 1998. He was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year by the media, All-Big Ten second team from the coaches and media, and a unanimous selection to the conference all-freshman team.
The Wolverines begin the 2012-13 campaign against Slippery Rock this Friday (Nov. 9) at the newly renovated Crisler Center. The regular-season opener is a doubleheader scheduled with the U-M women's basketball team and is scheduled for an 8:30 p.m. tipoff. The men's tilt will be broadcast via MGoBlue.com All-Access and BTN.com.
