Courtney Sims scored the first points of Michigan's 2003-04 season when tipped in a Bernard Robinson Jr. miss at 19:47 of the first half. Sims finished with 12 points, six rebounds and six blocked shots.
With his six blocks, Courtney Sims became the first Wolverine to swat away five shots in a game since Josh Asselin (1998-2001) turned away five against Iowa on March 3, 2000. Sims' single-game effort ranks tied for seventh on Michigan's single-game best list. Asselin was the last Wolverine with six blocks as he did so against Murray State on Dec. 24, 1997.
Dion Harris made his Maize and Blue regular-season debut tonight and scored his first career points when he bucketed a three-pointer at 14:43 of the first half. Harris finished wtih 15 points and six assists.
Junior captain J.C. Mathis made his debut for Michigan after sitting out last year due to NCAA transfer rules. In his first action as a Wolverine, Mathis pulled down five rebounds and added four points off the bench.
Michigan's tenacious defense forced 18 Oakland turnovers, with 12 steals and 10 blocked shots. Heading the effort was Bernard Robinson Jr. with three steals, while Daniel Horton and Chris Hunter added two steals apiece. Courtney Sims had six blocked shots.
Michigan out-rebounded Oakland by 14 as the total numbers stood at 46-32. Leading the way for the Maize and Blue was Bernard Robinson Jr. with eight (two offensive and six defensive).
