Sophomore guard Josh Bartelstein will give an inside look all season at the 2010-11 version of the Wolverines.
Hey everyone.
Since I last blogged, we have won two games against Bowling Green and Gardner-Webb. We played very well in both games with the key being our defense. It is amazing how good our defense looks right now after we struggled so much with it last year.
You have to give our entire coaching staff a lot of credit for this huge improvement. We have spent a lot more time working on defensive concepts and what exactly we are trying to do every possession. You can always hear Coach BA (Bacari Alexander) yelling keep the ball out of the club. (The club is the paint and we are the bouncers, very original)
The roommate combination of Jordan Morgan and Darius Morris has been on fire of late. We need to think of a nickname for this duel! Seriously though, D-Mo is dropping assists left and right and J-Mo continues to show how good he can be. Both of them are showing when you put in a lot of hard work, it pays off.
Another key part of our team so far has been the role of our sixth man -- Stu (Douglass). He has really settled into that roll of just coming in and doing whatever needs to be done. Stu can score points in bunches like he did against Gardner-Webb or, as he did against Bowling Green, just show his veteran savvy and settle everyone down.
Transitioning... so on Saturday before the Gardner-Webb game, we stayed at a hotel, something we don't do very often at home unless our game starts early. However this Saturday was different with everyone in town for the football game coach thought it was best to keep everyone together on Saturday night.
We were all in for a surprise when a Bar Mitzvah was taking place in the room next to our film room. Those seventh graders were rocking out and I got to explain to our entire team just what a Bar Mitzvah is. A Kippah and a Tallis aren't exactly things most of our team has seen before, but they are much more knowledgeable now on the Jewish religion.
Some guys on our team wanted to join the party, but I strongly advised against it since we weren't dressed for the part and kind of stick out because of our height. The kids did however manage find to Jordan sitting in the hot tub and apparently had a lot of questions for him.
Speaking of parties -- I want to congratulate my cousin Ben on his very own Bar Mitzvah, I'm sorry I cant be there but I'm very proud of you.
Before I can move on to our schedule for next week, we must first talk about what Matt (Vogrich) managed to pull of before the game on Thursday. Matt has a ritual that he always makes his last shot before he leaves the court. So when we were running into the locker room just before the game started on Thursday Matt decided to launch a shot from half court to see if he could knock it in.
The one issue was Juan, who manages Crisler Arena, was starting to clean the backboards with a mop contraption he designed. He always does this before games to make sure there are no smidges on the backboard.
Well, of course Matt managed to hit the mop and it exploded in half. Juan was in shock as one minute he was cleaning the backboard and the next he only had the handle of it in his hand. It was a classic Vogrich moment. I can assure you on Sunday Juan waited until everyone left the court before he began his mopping routine.
Moving forward ... we are off to the Legends Classic where we play Syracuse on Friday. We will start preparing for them on Wednesday, meaning the scout team will start putting in their plays and working on their different defenses.
On Thursday, Thanksgiving for all of you, we will board our charter and head over to Atlantic City. Then we play two games there and will get home some time very late Sunday morning. We will then leave Monday for Clemson where we take on the Tigers in the Big Ten/ACC challenge.
So as you see we are heading right into the thick of our season with a lot of travel. I think you guys will enjoy my blogs on the road because it will offer a lot of insight in to how we travel, which everyone always asks about.
Lastly, It is great to have C.J. Lee back on board as the director of administrative issues, or administrative specialist or, well... you get the idea. He is a great guy who will help the program in a big way.
