ROSEMONT, Ill. -- University of Michigan men's basketball freshman guard Zak Irvin (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern HS) was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week today (Monday, Dec. 2) by the conference office. Irvin earns his first career conference freshman of the week accolade.

Coming off the bench in the Wolverines' only game of the week, against Coppin State Friday (Nov. 29), Irvin led U-M to an 87-45 victory as he posted his first 20-plus point game, tallying a career-best 24 points. En route to the career total, he finished the game 9-for-13 from the field with a career-best 6-for-10 stat line from long range. He tied a career best in minutes played (26) and added three assists, with no turnovers, and five rebounds.

For the season, Irvin has come off the bench in all seven games, averaging 18.1 minutes, 7.4 points and 2.4 rebounds per contest. He is shooting 38.8 percent from the field and 37.5 from long range.

The Maize and Blue will travel to Durham, N.C., for a Tuesday night (Dec. 3) matchup against fourth-ranked Duke as part of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Tipoff is scheduled for 9:15 p.m., and the game will be televised on ESPN.
