PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- For the second consecutive week, University of Michigan men's basketball guard Nik Stauskas (Mississauga, Ontario/St. Mark's School [Mass.]) has been named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the conference office announced today (Monday, Dec. 3).
Stauskas helped the Wolverines remain undefeated at 7-0 with wins over No. 18 North Carolina State in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge (Nov. 27) and at Bradley (Dec. 1). He averaged 21.0 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game while shooting 56.0 percent (14-for-25) from the floor, 66.7 percent (8-for-12) from long range and a perfect 100 percent (6-for-6) from the free throw line.
He opened the week with then-career-best 20 points off the bench against N.C. State as he was 6-for-10 from the field with a career-best four three-pointers. He added two rebounds and an assist in 33 minutes of action.
Stauskas moved into the starting lineup at Bradley and posted his second straight 20-point game with a career-best 22 points. He finished 8-for-15 from the field, matched his career best with four three-pointers, and added three rebounds and two steals in a career-high 36 minutes.
For the season Stauskas is averaging 14.3 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. He is shooting 57.7 percent (30-for-52) from the floor and 62.1 percent (18-for-29) on three-point field goals. He has scored in double figures in his last six games and has hit at least one long-range basket in seven straight games. Stauskas has missed just one free throw this season as he is 22-for-23 (95.7 percent), which leads the Big Ten.
The Wolverines will return to action Tuesday (Dec. 4) when they host Western Michigan in the first of three consecutive home games at Crisler Center. Tipoff is slated for 8:30 p.m., and the game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
