Michigan Inks Five Recruits During Early Signing Period

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's basketball program received National Letters of Intent for the 2002-03 season from five student-athletes during the Nov. 14-21 National Letter of Intent early signing period:

  • Lester Abram, a 6-5 wing from Pontiac, Mich.
  • Amadou Ba, a 6-10 center from Bridgton, Maine
  • Graham Brown, a 6-9 forward from Mio, Mich.
  • Daniel Horton, a 6-2 point guard from Cedar Hill, Texas
  • Chris Hunter, a 6-11 center from Gary, Ind.

"We are extremely proud and excited that all five young men will be a part of the Michigan basketball family," said first-year head coach Tommy Amaker. "All five players are versatile with outstanding athletic ability and commitment to academics. We think they will have a very promising future here at Michigan."

Abram averaged 20.2 points, 10.3 rebounds and 3.8 blocks as a junior at Pontiac Northern High School. He was a 2001 Class A All-State first team selection by the Associated Press and Detroit News after leading Pontiac Northern to the Class A state championship title. He was also a Midwest Hoops Michigan All-State Dream Team, Detroit News All-Metro first team, Detroit Free Press All-State fourth team and All-Metro second team selection.

Ba averaged 7.0 points and 7.0 rebounds as a junior at Grissom High School in Huntsville, Ala. He has transferred to Bridgton Academy in Bridgton, Maine, for his senior season. Ba is originally from Mauritania, Africa, and speaks five different languages.

Brown, a National Honor Society member, averaged 24.0 points, 20.0 rebounds, 8.0 assists and 3.2 blocks as a junior at Mio-AuSable High School. The 2001 North Star League MVP has been part of three consecutive District and North Star League championship teams (1999-2001). He was a BCAM All-State second team, Class C All-State third team, All-North Star League first team, Bay City Times Dream Team, Bay City Times All-Northeastern Michigan first team and Alpena News All-Northeastern Michigan first team selection.

Horton, a consensus Top 25 national prospect, averaged 24.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.8 steals and 2.6 steals as a junior at Cedar Hill High School. In 2001, he was a Texas All-State first team selection, All-District MVP, Dallas Morning News All-Area first team and All-Greater Dallas Region first team.

Hunter, an honors student, averaged 21.9 points, 11.0 rebounds and 4.0 blocks as a junior at Gary West Side High School. In 2001, he was an Associated Press All-State honorable mention, IBCA underclassman All-State team, the Times All-Area Selection, Indiana Junior All-Star Selection, Hoosier Basketball Preseason All-State first team and the Times Preseason All-Area first team.

The Wolverines lose six players, five scholarship, after the 2001-02 season in seniors: forward Rotolu Adebiyi (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS), forward Ron Garber (Golden Valley, Minn./Hopkins HS), forward Herb Gibson (Taylor, Mich./Truman HS), guard Mike Gotfredson (Grosse Pointe, Mich./South HS), wing Leon Jones (Battle Creek, Mich./Winchendon Prep, Conn.) and forward Chris Young (Plymouth, Mich./Catholic Central HS).
