CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP NEWS

Brady
Tom Brady

• Patriots quarterback Tom Brady completed 24 of his 38 pass attempts on Sunday (Jan. 19) in his seventh career AFC Championship game, but it was not enough to overcome a 17-point deficit in Denver, as New England fell, 26-16. Brady aired it out in the fourth quarter and finished with 277 yards, his third-highest postseason total in seven games since 2010. Brady led two 80-yard drives in just over 6:00 total during the 4th quarter to pull New England within striking range. He threw the Pats' lone receiving touchdown to Julian Edelman with about 10:00 left in the final frame, and led New England down the field again on the team's next possession, scrambling for a five-yard touchdown run of his own. After a failed two-point conversion, Denver was able to run out the clock and earn the AFC Title.

• San Francisco 49ers center Jonathan Goodwin saw his team's Super Bowl dreams end on Sunday, too. San Fran lost, 23-17, in Seattle in a thriller of a game between the NFC West division rivals. Goodwin and the San Francisco offense finished with 161 yards rushing, with 49er ball carriers averaging nearly six yards per carry, but the team was unable to string together a full drive on their final possession, as a late turnover sealed the game for the Seahawks. Goodwin helped the 49er offense keep possession in the middle of the third quarter, when he recovered a fumble after Seattle DE Michael Bennett strip-sacked Colin Kaepernick in Seattle territory. Goodwin pounced on the ball to keep possession with San Francisco and the 49ers struck on the next play, when Kaepernick found Anquan Boldin for a 26-yard touchdown strike.
