Manningham, Baas Win First Career Super Bowl Rings with NY Giants

Wolverines in the NFL

SUPER BOWL XLVI

• Wide receiver Mario Manningham and center David Baas earned their first career NFL championship as the New York Giants edged the New England Patriots, 21-17, in Super Bowl XLVI. Manningham caught five passes for 73 yards and was quarterback Eli Manning's favorite target on the Giants' final drive. Trailing by two points at his 12-yard line with 3:46 left, Manningham tight-roped the sideline and hauled in a 38-yard pass to jumpstart the Giants' comeback hopes. Manningham caught two more passes for 18 yards during the drive, which resulted in a six-yard, game-winning rushing touchdown up the middle due to Baas' blocking with 57 seconds remaining. New York's offense generated 396 total yards -- 282 passing, 114 rushing -- without committing a turnover in the biggest game of the season.

• Quarterback Tom Brady fell just shy of winning his fourth Super Bowl championship as his hail mary pass fell to the turf as the clock hit 0:00. Brady completed 27-of-41 passes for 276 yards with two touchdowns and an interception in Super Bowl XLVI. Midway through the third quarter, Brady connected with tight end Aaron Hernandez for a 12-yard touchdown pass with his Super Bowl-record 16th straight completion to give New England a 17-9 lead, but the Patriots could not muster any more points for the rest of the second half. Zoltan Mesko punted three times in his Super Bowl debut, averaging 41 yards per punt while dropping one inside the Giants' 20-yard line.
