ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan Athletic Department announced today (Friday, Jan. 28) that Air Force will be the Wolverine football team's opponent for its 2012 home opener on Saturday, Sept. 8, at Michigan Stadium. The one-game agreement with the Falcons will come after facing Alabama in the season opener on Sept. 1 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
"We are excited to host Air Force in the 2012 home opener," said Athletic Director Dave Brandon. "Alabama, Air Force and Notre Dame make our non-conference schedule among the toughest in college football."
The only previous game played between the two schools came in the 1964 season opener. The Wolverines defeated the Falcons, 24-7, on Sept. 26 at Michigan Stadium. U-M went on to post a 9-1 overall record, claimed the Big Ten championship with a 6-1 mark and capped the season with a 34-7 victory over Oregon State in the Rose Bowl.
With the addition of Air Force, Michigan is looking to fill one open slot on its 2012 schedule. The open date is scheduled to be played at Michigan Stadium on Sept. 15 or Sept. 29.
