U-M Inks 17 Student-Athletes to National Letters of Intent

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan football head coach Lloyd Carr announced today (Wednesday, Feb. 5) the signing of 17 high school seniors to binding Letters of Intent for the 2003 football season. The announcement was made during the first day of the NLI signing period at a press conference held in the Michigan Sports Television Production Studio at 2 p.m. EST.

The Wolverines had two players named to the USA Today High School All-America team. Inside linebacker LaMarr Woodley (Saginaw, Mich./Saginaw HS) was a first-team All-USA selection while safety Ryan Mundy (Wilkins Township, Pa./Woodland Hills HS) earned second-team All-USA honors. Woodley joined linebackers Shawn Crable (Massillon, Ohio/Washington HS) and James Presley (Milford, Mich./Milford HS) as well as quarterback Clayton Richard (Lafayette, Ind./McCutcheon HS) as Parade Magazine All-Americans.

This year's recruiting class includes six players from the state of Michigan, including teammates Woodley and running back Jerome Jackson (Saginaw, Mich./Saginaw HS). The Wolverines also added a pair of players from Missouri and Ohio, with a total of 10 states comprising the sum total of this recruiting class.

Mundy joins former high school teammate Steve Breaston (North Braddock, Pa./Woodland Hills HS) as a member of the Wolverines squad. Breaston is a wide receiver that redshirted last season.

Woodley, Richard and safety Prescott Burgess (Warren, Ohio/Warren G. Harding HS) were named the players of the year in their respective states by numerous recruiting services.

Twelve of the 17 recruits received some form of All-America recognition from various recruiting services.
