ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan Associate Athletic Director Darryl Conway announced Wednesday (Feb. 12) the hiring of Brad Berlin as the Director of Equipment Operations for the athletic department. Berlin joins the Michigan family after spending the past 13 years with the Washington Redskins (2001-14).

Berlin will oversee the equipment operations for all 31 athletic teams. He will direct seven full-time equipment managers that report directly to him.

"This is a tremendous opportunity for me and my family," said Berlin. "To be able to come to Ann Arbor and help contribute to the storied tradition and history of Michigan Athletics is the chance of a lifetime. I look forward to taking the equipment operations of the department to the next level and winning many championships."

"We are excited to have Brad join our Michigan Athletics family in a leadership role as Director of Equipment Operations," said Conway. "Brad brings a wealth of experience from the collegiate and professional ranks and will provide great management and direction to our equipment operations."

Berlin brings 21 years of equipment management experience to his position at Michigan. He has spent the past 13 years with the Washington Redskins after stints at the University of Louisville (2000-01), University of Missouri (1998-2000), Colorado State University (1994-98) and Utah State University (1992-94).

With Washington, Berlin directed the equipment, apparel and on-field needs of the organization. Berlin was responsible for facilitating compliance of NFL on-field licensee rules for all players and staff and managed athlete endorsement contracts that pertained to shoe and apparel companies. He also worked to maintain positive relations with all equipment vendors and manufacturers while working with an internal group to ensure the safety and well-being of the athletes. Berlin managed two full-time assistants and seasonal help with the Redskins organization.

Prior to joining the equipment profession, Berlin spent one year as a programming intern at ESPN (1991). He conducted research and compiled information pertaining to MLB, college basketball and football. Berlin also generated data to support the network's expansion plans which eventually became ESPN2.

Berlin earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Missouri. He graduated with a bachelor of educational studies degree in sports administration (1989) and later earned his master's of education in sports administration (1993).

A native of Marshall, Mo., he has been a member of the Athletic Equipment Managers Association since 1994.

Berlin and his wife, Molly, have three children -- daughters Hannah and Miranda and son Brady.
