(April 8)
PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- The Big Ten Conference Office and the University of Michigan Athletic Department jointly announced today (Wednesday, April 6) the conference schedules for the 2013 and 2014 football seasons.
The Wolverines will open the 2013 Big Ten slate with a home game against Minnesota (Oct. 5), renewing the semiannual rivalry for the Little Brown Jug. Michigan will also face Indiana (Oct. 19), Nebraska (Nov. 9) and Ohio State (Nov. 30) at Michigan Stadium during the season. U-M will not have back-to-back home conference games during the year and will face Penn State (Oct. 12), Michigan State (Nov. 2), Northwestern (Nov. 16) and Iowa (Nov. 23) on the road.
In 2014, Michigan will open the conference schedule at Indiana on Sept. 27. U-M has two open dates during the season, the first on Oct. 4 and the second on Nov. 15. The Wolverines will open the home portion of the conference schedule against archrival Michigan State (Oct. 11). In addition to the battle for the Paul Bunyan Trophy, U-M has back-to-back home games against Penn State (Oct. 25) and Iowa (Nov. 1) and faces Northwestern (Nov. 22) at the Big House. The Wolverines have road tilts at Indiana, Minnesota (Oct. 18), Nebraska (Nov. 8) and Ohio State (Nov. 29).
The Big Ten football division alignments include the Legends Division featuring Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska and Northwestern, and the Leaders Division featuring Illinois, Indiana, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue and Wisconsin. Each school will play the other five schools within its division and will also face three teams from the other division, including one cross-division matchup guaranteed on an annual basis. The guaranteed cross-division matchups are Iowa-Purdue, Michigan-Ohio State, Michigan State-Indiana, Minnesota-Wisconsin, Nebraska-Penn State and Northwestern-Illinois.
The champions of the Legends Division and the Leaders Division will meet in the Big Ten Football Championship Game on the first Saturday of December, with the winner earning the Big Ten championship and a chance to play in the Rose Bowl Game or Bowl Championship Series National Championship Game.
