ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan football team, in conjunction with the Big Ten Conference, announced today (Thursday, May 16) the conference schedule for the 2014 season.
The 2014 conference slate will consist of eight games and feature new East and West division alignments with the conference debut of Maryland and Rutgers. U-M will face the other six schools from the East Division and two opponents from the West Division.
The Wolverines will open the 2014 conference schedule by hosting Minnesota at Michigan Stadium on Sept. 27 in the Battle for the Little Brown Jug. In addition to the conference home opener against the Golden Gophers, Michigan also will host Penn State (Oct. 11), Indiana (Nov. 1) and Maryland (Nov. 22) in Ann Arbor.
U-M's 2014 conference road schedule will begin on Oct. 4 in Piscataway, N.J., against new conference foe Rutgers. Following the Big Ten road opener, Michigan will travel to Michigan State (Oct. 25) and Northwestern (Nov. 8) for consecutive years before closing out the regular season at Ohio State (Nov. 29). U-M's open dates are slated for Oct. 18 and Nov. 15.
Michigan will play three of its four non-conference games at the Big House in 2014. The Maize and Blue will open the season at home against Appalachian State on Aug. 30 before traveling to Notre Dame in the second week of the season (Sept. 6). U-M will host Miami (Ohio) on Sept. 13 before finishing the non-conference slate on Sept. 20 with the front end of a home-and-home with Utah at Michigan Stadium.
Beginning in 2014, the Big Ten football division alignments will feature Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Penn State and Rutgers in the East Division and Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Purdue and Wisconsin in the West Division. Beginning in 2016, each school will play three teams from the other division in addition to the six teams in its own division as part of a new nine-game conference schedule.
